The difference between DV and DVCAM formats

Both Mini and large format DV tapes are capable of recording DV and DVCAM. Both will fit into a DVcam Camcorder, but a Camcorder designed for MiniDV will not accommodate the larger DVcam tapes. Both use the same codec, so the picture quality is the same. The difference is in the speed that the tape runs through the recorder. For example a MiniDV tape labeled 60 minutes will only last 40 minutes if recording in the DVcam format. When you record in the DVCAM format, the tape travels faster, which makes it less prone to errors and dropout.
